Luther Home Corporation Member Communiqué

Spring 2019

The 50th anniversary celebration continues as we move toward the summer season.

On January 25th Luther Home hosted a Founders Tea. This event recognized and celebrated the commitment and vision of those that were instrumental in founding Luther Home. Many family members of the founders were in attendance. A plaque recognizing the Founders has been placed at the front entrance.

Two new banners recognizing 50 years of service and commitment to the community have been hung on the west face of the building. They are visible from both Leila Ave and Partridge Ave.

On June 15th the Luther Home community is invited to celebrate 50 years of caring and serving. A community block party and barbeque will be held in the grass courtyard between the care home and 1084 Powers apartment building.

On September 27th a wine and cheese reunion will provide an opportunity for current and past staff and family members to meet, greet and share stories of their experiences at Luther Home. A fun event is planned.

On Sunday December 1st a special chapel service will mark 50 years to the day that Luther Home opened. This will also be the day to unveil a 50 year plaque to be placed at Luther Home.

Recently the Fundraising Committee sent to all corporation members a Lifting Our Spirits anniversary fundraising campaign letter. The response in a short time since the letter went out has been overwhelming. As a tribute to Luther Home’s 50th anniversary we are hoping to raise in excess of $100,000 to rejuvenate each resident’s room and establish a transportation fund to assist residents who wish to attend outings but cannot afford transportation costs. We encourage all corporate members to consider the importance of this cause in your charitable giving.

Recently Luther Home said farewell to two senior staff members. Liz Maas retired in December after 23 years of service. We wish Liz the best in this new and exciting phase of her life. Darren Luellman left us in December. We wish Darren the best in his future endeavors. Maria Aiello retired after 9 years at Luther Home. Thanks to Maria for leading Staff Education and Training.

Two new Leadership Team members joined Luther Home on March 11, 2019. Karen Odiatu works closely with residents and care staff as Director of Resident Services. Eddie Marion-Gerula is settling into his role as Director of Recreation and Volunteer Services. We welcome Karen and Eddie to our Luther Home family. Also, Susan Konowalchuk will be joining the team as Staff Educator starting May 6th.

The former group home at 364 Leila is currently occupied by an 11 member Sudanese refugee family. The family arrived in November 2017 under North End Sponsorship Team (NEST) sponsorship. In the fall of 2018 NEST sponsorship concluded and we are most pleased that the family saw fit to continue to reside at 364 Leila on a year to year lease. Our relationship with the family has been very positive.
