Corporate Member Communiqué
We are thankful for the opportunities given to us during 2019 to celebrate 50 Years of service at Luther Home. Unfortunately, 2020 has begun in a unique and challenging way, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
The well-being of our Residents and Staff continues to be our utmost priority. Thus, effective March 12, 2020, Luther Home has been closed to all visitors, and all planned events have been postponed or cancelled until further notice.
We are pleased there has not been a case of COVID-19 at Luther Home. Prevention is key: Staff are screened prior to each shift (temperature and any symptoms). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is in use for all Staff who provide direct care or who must compromise physical distancing to fulfill their role. Communication and education sessions for Staff and Residents occur regularly.
Residents and Family Members are updated regularly with current COVID-19 information, and any resulting change in procedures. Family notices are posted on the Luther Home website () along with photos of our Residents participating in activities. Tending to Residents’ physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs has required many adaptations to keep both Residents and Staff safe. Necessary personal care continues for Residents, with strategies in place to minimize close contact. Dr. Heather Domke attends to the Resident’s medical needs through virtual physician visits on a weekly and as-needed basis.
Alterations in routine and changes to socialization can be difficult for some of our Residents. Physical distancing of Residents and Staff is now a factor in all facets of daily living, whether it is at mealtime, during care, or at programs. Many activities have been either stopped or altered. The Adult Day Program has been temporarily discontinued at this time.
Spiritual Care for our Residents is extremely important and more so at this time. Sunday Spiritual Services at Luther Home have limited in-Chapel attendees (seated at a safe distance); however the Service is broadcast on the screens in the Recreation Area and in Residents’ rooms for all to participate. Communion was provided to over forty Residents this past Sunday in a manner that kept both Pastor Hanny and our Residents as safe as possible. Please remember that Luther Home’s Spiritual Care program, including our Pastor’s salary, is totally financed through donations. We ask that you consider a donation to our Spiritual Care fund. To do so, please click on the Canada Helps button on the Luther Home website, or send a cheque in the mail as our facility is currently closed to visitors.
Families are now encouraged to communicate with Residents through virtual visits via a recently purchased IPad. Window visits for Families and Residents can also be accommodated through our large Coffee Shop windows. Please contact Eddie in Recreation (204 336 5380) in order to arrange such a visit.
Our front-line Leadership Team has regular communication with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Shared Health Services Manitoba to ensure compliance with evolving directives and protocols concerning COVID-19. Regular updates to the Board of Directors through email, combined with scheduled Board and Executive Committee meetings via teleconference ensure that effective governance is maintained at Luther Home.
We applaud and thank every single one of our Staff for their vigilance and care in keeping our Residents and themselves healthy and safe during this pandemic. This includes those who work in Laundry, Dietary, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Resident Care (Nurses and Healthcare Aides), Recreation, Administration, Leadership, Social Work, and Spiritual Care. We are also extremely appreciative of how well our Residents and their Families have adapted and cooperated with these unsettling changes in routines, programming, and lack of direct personal visits and hugs from their loved ones.
Thank you for your continued support and for your respectful understanding of the physical distancing protocols and closures in place at Luther Home. Please remember Luther Home Residents and Staff in your prayers.
